Planning a trip while wearing Invisalign? Good news: your clear aligners don’t have to slow down your travel plans! With a bit of preparation, you can keep your treatment on track while enjoying your adventures.
Here’s what you need to know before you pack your bags.
Pack an Invisalign Travel Kit
Before you leave, prepare a small Invisalign travel kit to keep your aligners clean and safe on the go. Your kit should include:
- Your Invisalign case
- Extra aligners (previous and next set, if your orthodontist recommends)
- Travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste
- Floss or floss picks
- Cleaning crystals or a retainer cleaning solution
- Hand sanitizer
Keeping these essentials in your carry-on ensures you can maintain your oral hygiene even during long flights or road trips.
Stick to Your Wear Schedule
Consistency is key when it comes to Invisalign treatment. Remember to wear your aligners for 20–22 hours each day, even while traveling. It may be tempting to leave them out longer while enjoying local food or drinks, but skipping wear time can delay your treatment progress. Set a phone alarm if needed to remind yourself when it’s time to put your aligners back in after meals.
Keep Aligners Clean While on the Go
Travel often means trying new foods and snacks, but don’t forget to remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. After meals, rinse your mouth and brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in to prevent bacteria and staining. If brushing isn’t possible immediately, at least rinse your mouth and aligners with water until you can brush properly.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is important for your overall health and your Invisalign journey. Dry mouth can occur during travel, especially on flights, which may cause discomfort with your aligners. Keep a water bottle with you and sip frequently to keep your mouth clean and your aligners clear.
Don’t Forget to Pack Your Previous Aligners
It’s a good idea to pack your previous set of aligners when you travel. If you lose or damage your current aligners, wearing your previous set can help maintain your progress until you can contact your dentist for guidance. If your trip is longer than your current aligner cycle, talk with your dentist beforehand about when to switch to your next set.
Enjoy Your Travels Without Delaying Your Smile
Traveling with Invisalign doesn’t have to be complicated. With a bit of planning and consistency, you can stick to your treatment while enjoying your vacation. Stay prepared, stay consistent, and keep smiling!
