Implant dentures are widely regarded as the gold standard for full-arch tooth replacement, offering a level of stability, function, and natural appearance that traditional dentures simply can’t match. But because the process involves multiple appointments spread out over several months, it can feel a little overwhelming if you’re not sure what to expect. The good news is that when you break it down stage by stage, the implant denture journey is very manageable! Here’s a thorough look at how the process works from start to finish.
1. Initial Consultation
During this visit, your dentist will take a close look at your oral health, jawbone density, and overall medical history to determine whether you’re a good candidate for implant dentures. This typically involves dental X-rays and, in many cases, a CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan, which creates a detailed three-dimensional image of your jaw. This level of detail allows your dentist to map out the precise location, angle, and depth at which the implant posts will be placed.
If any preliminary treatments are needed, such as tooth extractions, gum disease treatment, or bone grafting, these will be completed before implant surgery can begin. While this can add some time to the overall process, it’s important for long-term implant success.
2. Implant Surgery
Once your treatment plan is finalized and any preparatory work is complete, it’s time for the implant placement surgery. Small titanium posts are carefully and precisely placed into your jawbone. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and sedation options are typically available to help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout.
After surgery, you can expect some swelling, tenderness, and mild discomfort for a few days, which is normal and manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers. Your dentist will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you heal comfortably and quickly.
3. Osseointegration
Osseointegration is the biological process in which the titanium implant posts fuse with the surrounding jawbone tissue, creating a stable and permanent anchor for your new teeth. This process typically takes anywhere from three to six months, depending on your individual healing rate and how many implants were placed.
Once the implants have fully integrated with the bone, they function just like natural tooth roots, stimulating the jawbone, preventing bone loss, and providing a remarkably solid foundation for chewing and speaking. Once osseointegration is complete, small connector pieces called abutments are attached to the tops of the implant posts.
4. Delivery of Dentures
When your final denture is ready, your dentist will attach or snap it into place and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a precise, comfortable fit and a proper bite. For fixed implant dentures, the prosthetic is secured permanently to the abutments. For removable implant dentures, you’ll be shown how to snap the denture on and off with ease and how to clean it properly at home.
The implant denture process does take time, typically anywhere from six months to over a year from consultation to completion. But for the vast majority of patients, the end result represents a completely transformed quality of life!
